I never tried calling before tonight
« on: June 18, 2014, 09:29:40 PM »
I've tooted a call a time or two in the past but I was never serious about it. Tonight I went out and for the first time honestly gave an effort to calling coyotes. I don't have any fancy gear, my very first set (used a Primos Ki-Yi, yelps and pup in distress) resulted in this:

Nice, the question is are you addicted to calling dogs now?

Thanks guys, I can't say I'm addicted yet but I learned a lot that first time out and am looking forward to my next trip out. I think I need a good howler call and this is as good a reason as any for a new rifle which will obviously need some good glass and... aww dangit!

Turner, I don't know for sure. More than 5 minutes, less than 15. I'd actually stopped calling a few minutes prior and was wondering how long I should sit there waiting when he popped over a small bluff looking for the noise. About the only advice I had was from an old friend (RIP bro) who told me that if you don't get results relatively quickly take off and try a new spot.

Now the question debated on the wastage thread,

Are you going to eat it? :hello: :yike: :sry:

Nope, Ruger Gunsite Scout

HaHa no I won't be eating coyote anytime soon. I did remove it from the field though since that is apparently wastage. I was waiting for someone to ask that.

:) about 25 years ago I posted a thread like yours. In two years you will have 5 electronic calls, 100 mouth calls and 3 dedicated calling rifles. :chuckle:
a 223 in an AR, a bolt gun in 22-250 and a 243 or similar.  Welcome to the addiction, in about 4 years you will quit answering calling questions, and get real picky about who you show your tricks.
You will start laughing at the questions and answers you see on sites.
I love this *censored*!!!!!!!! calling never gets old, I even call places I cannot shoot, just to see the reaction. Welcome to a world of never ending learning.

Thats funny but I can definitely see it coming true. I've already been looking on gunbroker for a .260 and there are a couple mouth calls I plan on picking up next time I'm in town!

I went out again tonight, called in two pups but they didnt like my homemade motion decoy and hung up at around 250 (I could have tried but I wasn't positive on the shot with irons so I passed, didn't really wanna shoot a pup anyway). Then after they got bored and went back over the hill a larger adult came to investigate, he hung up to but I couldn't not try so I guess I educated one this evening.

The question is are you going to get the full rail for the gss or go with a scout scope? How do you like the rifle? 16 in or 18?
